Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference compared to manually creating flashcards with ChatGPT or other AI models?

Beyond saving a lot of time compared to copy‑pasting from ChatGPT, the cards are improved in several ways. Standardized prompts in each step of processing your PDF include instructions designed to increase pedagogy. For example:

The tool asks the AI, both in the design and in the quality control of each question (the AI runs twice per question/answer), to make every question self‑contained and to test separate concepts and lines of reasoning that are not tested in the other generated questions.

A substantial part of the scripts focuses on excluding information that is usually irrelevant, such as the date a document was written or the author's name. The algorithms are optimized to isolate what is relevant to help the learner understand the content of the PDF.

The card format is standardized to reduce visual noise, and there is also an Explain with ChatGPT button in each answer which, with a single click, opens a new ChatGPT chat with the full question and answer for further exploration.

Here is how we optimize for really good questions (compared to running directly in ChatGPT):

  • Source faithfulness and traceability: Questions are anchored in the source text with page/section references to reduce hallucinations.
  • Quality assurance: De‑duplication, terminology normalization, and language review for clear, unambiguous questions and answers.
  • Structure for Anki: Ready‑to‑use, validated cards.
  • Long‑text and PDF optimization: Robust PDF extraction (clean headers/footers, columns, lists), chunking, and context retrieval for large documents.
  • Consistency and control: Low temperature, multi‑pass generation with verification against the source text before inclusion in the Anki package.

In short: You get more consistent quality, better coverage of the material, fewer hallucinations, and cards ready for Anki — without manual post‑processing.

How much does the service cost?

You get 50 credits (≈ $5.0) for free when you start. After that you can buy more credits if you want to continue using the service.

The credit cost per PDF depends on how much information the PDF contains. A 10‑page PDF with little text and images might cost about 1 credit (≈ $0.1), while a more information‑dense 10‑page PDF can cost around 15 credits.

You always see an estimated cost before you start the generation. The cost is influenced, among other things, by what the AI model actually costs to run on your PDF.

Chat with PDF costs 0.1 credit per message. You can always see your current balance in the account menu.

What do I need to start using my flashcards?

To use your generated flashcards you need to download the Anki application. Anki is completely free on desktop (Windows, Mac and Linux) and can be downloaded from apps.ankiweb.net. Once installed you can import the .apkg file generated from your PDF and start studying right away. apps.ankiweb.net.

How many Anki cards are generated from my PDF?

The number of cards depends on the amount and complexity of the content. A typical set of lecture notes of 10–20 pages can generate 20–50 cards. The AI analyzes the material and creates cards based on key concepts, definitions, and factual details. At the moment you cannot control the exact number of cards in advance.

Can I edit the cards after they have been generated?

Yes! When you download the .apkg file and import it into Anki you can edit all cards just like ordinary Anki cards. You can change questions, answers, add images, format text, and organize cards into different decks according to your needs.

How long does the AI generation take?

It varies depending on the file size and system load, but usually takes a few minutes. If you want you can leave the page and come back later and find your flashcards in the Your Files section.

Which file formats are supported?

Currently we only support PDF files. The PDF should contain text (not just images) for best results. Scanned documents may work, but the quality of the generated cards can vary depending on text legibility.

What happens to my uploaded files?

Your PDF files are stored securely on our servers so you can access them and the generated Anki cards later. The files are sent to OpenAI for AI processing. We do not review the content of your files, but you are responsible for only uploading material you have the right to use. Read more in our Privacy Policy. Privacy Policy.

How do I quickly edit a card in Anki (Windows/Mac)?

In the study view (Reviewer) and in the Browser you can press E to open the editor for the selected/current card. Works on both Windows and macOS.

How do I quickly delete (or suspend) a card in Anki?

Study view (Reviewer):

  • Delete note: Windows: Ctrl + Delete, macOS: ⌘ Cmd + ⌫ Backspace
  • Suspend card: S (Windows/macOS)

Browser:

  • Delete selected notes: Windows: Delete, macOS: Delete (on laptops: fn or 🌐 Globe + ⌫ Backspace)
  • Suspend selected cards: S (Windows/macOS)

By "laptops" we mean Mac laptops that lack a physical Delete key. Use fn (function key) or 🌐 Globe together with Backspace to get Delete. Alternatively, you can always choose Edit → Delete in Anki's menu.

Note that keyboard shortcuts can vary between versions and can be customized in Anki's settings.

How do I handle cards that are not relevant to me?

An effective workflow is to delete or suspend cards created from content that was not relevant. That way you save time the next time you review the same deck and can focus on what you find particularly effective and relevant.

What do I do if an answer isn't enough?

There is also a ChatGPT button on the cards that you can use to get further explanations, alternative phrasings, or deeper dives if a question is not optimally answered for your study needs.

A tip is to copy the parts of the ChatGPT answer that you liked and paste them into the card that you felt needed a more detailed answer. This creates an effective workflow where you only make edits that actually contribute to learning, without spending extra time manually copying, pasting, and formatting the majority of your study material.
